Decorating Tips for Tiny Bathrooms

A bathroom is primarily a functional space, with even the largest leaving relatively little room for decorative considerations. If you have a tiny bathroom, there will be absolutely no room for décor, which can leave the space looking a little bland. However if you are willing to think outside of the bath, and use a little creativity, you will start to see all sorts of ways that you can add personal points of interest to various spots around the room.

The first thing you should consider is the look of the various items which have to be there for functional use. This includes soap dispensers, soap trays, toothbrush holders, towel racks, and the various other utensils necessary in a bathroom. One really easy way to pull together a decorative look is to get all of these items in matched colors and or finishes.

Towels, wash clothes, and other linens will also make up a considerable portion of the rooms appearance. Purchase these in matched or contrasted tones, or get wild with patterns, images, and designs. Coordinate these colors with the other functional accessories and you will be able to start decorating the room without taking up any additional space.

The floor is another place where you can add personal touches without hurting functionality. Rugs, carpets, or mats serve the dual purpose of keeping your feat warm, and allowing you to add color or design to the space. You can also purchase traction mats for the bathtub which can be quite stylish and will improve the safety of the space.

The walls of a bathroom will be the place where you get to be frivolous, and hang decorative pieces that won’t serve any function except to inspire you in the morning. These can be art prints, decorative signs, or interesting hanging crafts. Be sure that any prints are encased in a glass frame to protect them from splashes, and never put up bare posters, as the moisture in the room will warp them.

If this isn’t enough room to get creative there are a few design elements that you can change which are relatively simple and inexpensive. For one thing, many manufacturers produce standard bathroom fixtures on tinier than average scales. There are water saving commodes which do not have the large tank behind them, as well as a variety of smaller pedestal and corner sinks available.

Another option is to invest in a set of sliding doors for the entranceway. These pocket doors open sideways, which eliminates the feeling of the door crowing out the space and dividing it in half when opened. These sideways doors can also be purchased for the shower enclosure.

The color of the room itself will also have an effect on the perceived size of the space. In general, darker colors will tend to fall in on the room, making it feel cramped and claustrophobic. On the other hand lighter, airier colors will open the bathroom up and make it seem like the walls are receding from you. Contrasting dark bolding with light colored walls can increase this illusion by developing the appearance of shadows in the space.

Just because your bathroom is a little tiny doesn’t mean that it can’t look fabulous. All you have to do is use some imagination, and a few visual tricks, and you will be able to take the tiny right out of your bathroom, leaving it to feel larger and more comfortable than ever before.
